Rita Muthoni Gatonye is an influential advocate for harm reduction and progressive drug policies across East Africa. Her advocacy journey has been marked by a deep commitment to prioritizing the health, dignity, and rights of individuals facing substance use issues. Under her leadership, harm reduction programs have flourished, providing essential support to marginalized communities. Rita’s advocacy has driven policy reform efforts, ushering in evidence-based approaches to drug addiction and reshaping how society addresses this complex issue of inclusion, especially for women who use drugs (WWUDs). Her impact extends beyond borders through cross-border collaborations and regional initiatives, fostering solidarity among women who use drugs in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. Rita’s engagement with policymakers has been instrumental in transforming the policy landscape, placing public health and human rights at the forefront. Her dedication to community engagement empowers women drug users to take ownership of their recovery and advocate for their rights. Rita is the Founder and Director of Women in Response to AIDS and Drug Addiction (WRADA). As a board member of KUZA TRUST, she brings her wealth of expertise to further enhance the organization’s mission, aligning her advocacy with KUZA TRUST’s commitment to social justice and community well-being especially for women who use drugs.
